The Dangers of Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is one of the must have products when it comes to achieving good skin. It locks in moisture for those who suffer with dry and dehydrated skin and has been used in injectable form, for years, to iron out fine lines and wrinkles. Even topical application can reduce the appearance of creased and ageing skin.
As Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in our skin, it is suitable for all skin types and will rarely, if ever, cause problems or sensitivity. It truly is a miracle product that lives up to the hype and that’s why we are seeing it on the ingredients list of most new skincare products coming to market. However, with summer approaching, hyaluronic acid may not be the product for you.
The way hyaluronic acid works (topically) is by taking the moisture out of the air and sucking it into your skin, giving you that signature plump and juicy look so many of us love when using a product where hyaluronic acid is an active ingredient. But when the weather changes, or we are on holiday in an extremely hot and dry climate, the hyaluronic acid product we are using will look for moisture elsewhere. Meaning that if we are sunning ourselves in Las Vegas or Egypt this summer, our hyaluronic acid products may be doing us more harm than good by leeching out whatever moisture we already have in our skin, as it can’t take it from the air in these drier destinations.
A way to counteract this is by using a humectant/ occlusive moisturiser over the top of your hyaluronic acid serums to stop any moisture escaping from the skin. Similarly, choosing a serum where the hyaluronic molecules are varied in size will also ensure every inch of the skin, even down to the deepest layers, is restored to a happy and hospitable collagen creating environment. NIOD have created an incredible product called Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex which combines both larger and smaller molecules, so you are protected in every layer of the dermis.
Summer isn’t the only time we may be in danger with our hyaluronic acid. If you are one of those people who keeps the heating on 24/7 and 365 days a year, chances are that the air in your house and bedroom will also be severely lacking in moisture and may steal some precious dew from already parched skin. Using a cheap addition like a radiator humidifier can ensure the atmosphere inside your home will not age you or dry you out like a raisin.
So, wherever you are going this summer, be sure to check the humidity level before you decide to layer on the hyaluronic, as it just may do you more harm than good.
